Companies and AIST engage in joint research and development work by harnessing the technology seeds of AIST.
Researchers are dispatched between the laboratories and facilities owned by AIST can be rented. Shared intellectual property rights resulting from joint research are subject to separate discussions carried out subsequent to the production of these results. Templates for contracts have been prepared in accordance with the characteristics of any technology expected to be commercially viable.

Setting up collaborative (named) research laboratories
In order to carry out research and development work with a greater focus placed on the needs of companies, AIST can set up collaborative (named) research laboratories named for the companies with which partnerships have been formed within AIST. AIST’s resources—which consist of technology seeds, equipment, and human resources—can be utilized to the maximum extent possible in the service of open innovation.

Commissioned research
AIST carries out the work of research and development on research themes entrusted to it by commercial companies. AIST can undertake research in areas of technology in which AIST has no previous knowledge. After commissioned research is completed, the research results are submitted via a written report.

Using the AIST Group’s intellectual property
A company can acquire a license to use the intellectual property owned by the AIST Group. AIST then undertakes the procedures for the confidentiality agreements needed when matching seeds to needs, agreements to provide the research samples needed to evaluate technology seeds, agreements for the disclosure of technical data, licensing agreements, and other contractual matters.

Utilizing ABCI
A company can use the AI bridging cloud infrastructure (ABCI), the world’s largest computational infrastructure for the artificial intelligence processing, for the purpose of engaging in AI-related research and development work.

・Unique laboratory space—including physical labs, scientific labs, biological labs, and clean rooms—can be used as a setting for leading-edge research, the development of new products, and the creation of new industries.
- You want to use the research facilities and equipment of AIST
Research facilities and equipment can be rented by companies even without a joint research agreement with AIST.
- You want to use research facilities and equipment for the purpose of commercializing AIST research results
・AIST research facilities can be leased to companies aiming to use and commercialize AIST research results (such as patents). These can be used for research and development, the shipping of samples, and other purposes with a view to achieving commercialization.
- You want to use AIST’s leading-edge equipment at a shared facility
・AIST makes leading-edge equipment across a wide range of fields available to society at a shared facility together with its know-how. Around 300 pieces of equipment and instruments can be used on nine different platforms, including a super-clean room.
Establishing and supporting startups
AIST certifies startups that are consistent with the AIST Group management policy as AISol startups and supports the growth and promotion of commercialization from a variety of standpoints, including engineering, marketing, business acceleration, and capital reinforcement. AIST will also advise companies on the creation of startups based on the use of AIST technology and the provision of capital investments and other forms of support for growth.
